Signing Day: Ex-UGA QB commit stays in the SEC, signs with Ole Miss

John Rhys Plumlee, a 3-star quarterback from Mississippi, might have been influenced by Dwan Mathis' December signing with Georgia.

John Rhys Plumlee made it official on Wednesday, flipping his commitment from UGA to Ole Miss for National Signing Day.

The Hattiesburg, Mississippi native had initially sided with the Bulldogs last summer, but things might have changed for Plumlee once Georgia surprisingly landed Dwan Mathis during the Early Signing Period (Dec. 19-21).

Mathis, the No. 3-ranked dual-threat quarterback (source: Rivals.com), was a last-minute addition to Kirby Smart's class for 2019, likely a happy consequence to Justin Fields' sudden transfer from UGA to Ohio State.

As such, Plumlee (13th-ranked dual-threat QB) adjusted on the fly and ended up signing within his home state.

Heading into Signing Day, Plumlee and Lance LeGendre were the only unsigned elite-level quarterbacks from Rivals' Top 50 listing.

On Wednesday, LeGendre (out of New Orleans), once thought to be a proverbial lock for Florida State, stunned many with his signing at the University of Maryland.

DEPTH CHART

Here's how the Plumlee exodus affects Georgia for the upcoming season:

STARTER: Jake Fromm (averaged 27 touchdown passes as a freshman/sophomore ... guided the Bulldogs to consecutive SEC East titles).

BACKUP #1: Transfer Stetson Bennett, who returned to the program after a short stint in the junior-college ranks).

BACKUP #2: Matthew Downing (completed 8 of 10 passes in mop-up duty last season).

BACKUP #3: True freshman Dwan Mathis. If Fromm turns pro after next season, Mathis could potentially enjoy a three- or four-year window as UGA's starter.
