Victims identified in I-85 wreck that killed three people

It happened early Friday morning.

ATLANTA — UPDATE: The Fulton County Medical Examiner has identified the three victims in the crash as 26-year-old Mercedes Ammamoo of Austell, 29-year-old Alyeshia Walton of Norcross and 36-year-old Shavon McDavid of Houston, Texas.

A deadly wreck blocked all lanes of traffic on Interstate 85 North near the Buford Highway connector Friday morning.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, traffic was backed up in the northbound lanes of I-85 due to a fatal incident.

Atlanta Police said three people were killed in the wreck after a white Ford Escape ran into the back of a tractor trailer. The ambulance arriving on scene to help the victims also was hit from the rear.

Atlanta Fire responded to reports of the accident in the area around 4 a.m., according to the agency. Firefighters said they arrived, blocked the road, and extricated the three victims from a white Ford Escape who had been killed.

Motorists were advised to take alternate routes before crews cleared the incident around 7:45 a.m., according to GDOT.  

Georgia State Patrol has launched an investigation into the accident.
