All lanes of I-285 north shut down in Atlanta after roughly 200 gallons of sulfuric acid spilled

Two HERO responders were taken to the hospital after being exposed to the chemical.

ATLANTA — A chemical spill has shut down all lanes of the Interstate 285 north expressway at Langford Parkway eastbound in Atlanta, fire officials said Thursday evening.

Atlanta Fire and Rescue firefighters were called out to the interstate around 5 p.m. When crews got there, they found approximately 200 gallons of sulfuric acid spilled across the roadway.

Two Highway Emergency Response Operators (HEROs) were taken to the hospital after being exposed to the chemical, fire officials said.

Sulfuric acid is an odorless and colorless chemical and is highly corrosive and destructive to the skin, eyes, teeth and lungs if exposed, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It's unclear at this time when the interstate will reopen.
