NWS confirms 2 tornadoes touched down in Pickens County

A new storm survey shows than an EF0 tornado was confirmed along Carver Mill Road and an EF1 tornado touched down along Fitts Road in Jasper.

PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. — The National Weather Service confirmed Saturday that two tornadoes touched down in Pickens County when a strong line of severe storms rolled through north Georgia on Thursday.

A new storm survey shows than an EF0 tornado was confirmed along Carver Mill Road near Hinton and an EF1 tornado touched down along Fitts Road in Jasper.

The drone sent up by the NWS shows that while there were two tornadoes that touched down in Pickens County, much of the structural damage and downed trees were caused by strong straight line winds.

Another survey also released by the NWS Saturday showed damaging winds that went over 80 mph hit much of north Cherokee County on Thursday. Cherokee County lies directly below Pickens County on the Georgia county map.

The evaluation is still ongoing, and experts expect more information to be made available in the coming days as they continue to analyze the data.

Further surveys are planned on Saturday in South East Pickens and North Forsyth Counties, where authorities will gather additional data to assess the full extent of the damage caused by the high-speed winds.

The storms that swept through metro Atlanta were marked by their severity, fueled by soaring temperatures and humidity. Reports of damage poured in from various counties, with thousands of Georgia Power customers affected by power outages.
