Strong storms leave behind down trees in metro Atlanta area

Cold front pushes rain out

ATLANTA — Severe weather plagued much of the country this Memorial Day weekend, with storms arriving in Georgia early on Monday.

As of now, most damage appears to have been caused by strong winds, which brought down trees on roads across the area.

10:00 p.m. |  The severe thunderstorm watch expired at 10pm. 

6:56 p.m. | 11Alive's Chief Meteorologist Chris Holcomb said that although the main complex of storms has moved out from north Georgia and metro Atlanta, there's still a chance for lingering showers to develop. He gives a rundown of the latest forecast below. 

6:52 p.m. | There's a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m. for Jasper, Pike, Meriwether, Troup, Butts, Lamar, Spalding and Putnam counties. 

6:26 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Fayette, Coweta, Henry, Butts, Spalding Clayton counties. It's set to expire at 7 p.m.

5:45 p.m.: Amicalola EMC posted on social media stating that 4,201 members are without power at 120 separate locations. It has been having some issues with its outage report system and are working to get it resolved. 

3:59 p.m.: Georgia Power crews are along Lower Roswell Road in Cobb County after trees and power lines fell during the strong morning storms

3:49 p.m.: Amicalola EMC in Jasper posted on social media that they've found several broken poles and downed trees on power lines all over Pickens, Gilmer, northern Cherokee and west Dawson. It also stated that the Nelson/Tate area was hit hard. 

Blue Ridge Ave. in Nelson had damage and potentially several broken poles. Hwy 53 around Philadelphia Road in Jasper has multiple trees on power lines. Amicalola said crews are working in those areas. In Gilmer County, Roberts Ridge Rd has multiple trees on power lines, and in Dawson County, there is a broken 3-phase pole on Hwy 183, west of Afton Rd, along with a broken single-phase pole. Power lines are also down at Fausett Lake and Sassafras Mtn. 

There are also 143 outages affecting 5,542 members, Amicalola EMC said. 

3:46 p.m.: Brookhaven Police posted on social media that Cravenridge Dr./Tryon Rd. and Cynthia Dr./Tryon Rd. are blocked due to a tree over power lines. 

3:37 p.m.: Cobb County Police posted on the X platform that Lower Roswell Road between Indian Hill Parkway and Lindsey Road will be closed due to downed trees and utility lines.

2:13 p.m.: The tornado watch for our area expired at 2pm.  The National Weather Service issued another one for central and south Georgia until 10pm.  This is well to the south of the metro area.  The only county in our viewing area in this watch is Upson county.  

1:15 p.m.: Severe Thunderstorm Warning from 5/27/2024 1:14 PM to 1:45 PM EDT for Upson County, GA.

12:42 p.m.: Severe Thunderstorm Warning from 5/27/2024 12:40 PM to 1:15 PM EDT for Meriwether County, GA, Upson County, GA.

11:44 a.m.: Severe Thunderstorm Warning from 5/27/2024 11:42 AM to 12:15 PM EDT for Meriwether County, GA, Troup County, GA.

9:28 a.m.: Henry County Emergency Management is reporting that a tree fell on a house in Hampton and one other was struck by lightning.
