One year ago, CNBC did a similar study and ranked Georgia as the 10th best for business in America. The Peach State moved up six spots in 2023.

ATLANTA — A new study from CNBC ranked America's top states for business in 2023, and the Peach State ranks right near the top.

The data was gathered through several sources that measured the states' performance and were scored based on a diverse group of CNBC business experts who studied the data based on 86 metrics and ten broad categories of competitiveness.

Here are the top 10 states for business in the United States:

  1. North Carolina
  2. Virginia
  3. Tennessee
  4. Georgia
  5. Minnesota
  6. Texas
  7. Washington
  8. Florida
  9. Utah
  10. Michigan

One year ago, CNBC did a similar study, ranking Georgia as the 10th best for business in America. The Peach State moved up six spots in 2023.

The study also lists the areas of business that states use as a selling point in economic development marketing materials. CNBC included rankings of each state based on those ten broad categories.

Georgia takes home the top spot for their booming infrastructure business and ranks in the top 10 for their economy (No. 4) and workforce (No. 8).

However, the state's lowest ranking of all the categories comes in the life, health and inclusion category (No. 39), which determines the "best" and "worst" states to live in. This category measures crime rates, environmental quality, healthcare, worker protections and inclusiveness in state laws.

This means the study ranks Georgia as the 11th worst state to live in for the second consecutive year.

Georgia also ranks in the top 20 with their cost of living (No. 14) and their technology and innovation business (No. 19).
