UNION COUNTY, Ga. — A man was shot and killed by deputies in Union County Sunday, according to a recent release from authorities in the area.

At this time, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is being brought in to investigate the incident, as is customary.

The shooting itself happened at a home on Wesley Mountain Road in Blairsville.

Union County deputies were originally sent out over a "domestic dispute with a gun" around 3:20 p.m.

There, they claim they attempted to negotiate with 85-year-old Wendall Cross. However, deputies said he ended up firing his gun in their direction.

The deputies shot back and hit Cross, who was later taken to a hospital and died from his injuries.

The sheriff's office said the GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once finished, the agency will turn its findings over to the Union County District Attorney’s Office for review.
