Residents of neighborhood, plagued by gun violence, ready for change

"We going to get the it the hell out of Pointer Ridge."

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Residents in the Pointer Ridge neighborhood are saying enough, is enough.

Early Thursday morning, a 12-year-old girl was grazed in the leg by a bullet while sleeping inside her home on Connell Road in South Fulton County. She was taken to the hospital and later released, and she is expected to be OK.

Fulton County police said the shooting is still under investigation and there are no suspects or motive at this time.

This is the latest in a string of shootings in the Pointer Ridge subdivision. Between Nov. 7 and Nov. 10, there were three shootings reported where police found more than 240 shell casings.

Police have not made any arrests in any of the shootings and no injuries were reported. The map below shows where the incidents happened and details from police.

In the wake of the recent shooting, community members held a meeting in Creel Park Thursday night. Residents said shootings in the neighborhood have been a problem for a long time, and they're ready to make a change.

"I worked too hard for what i got, and nobody gonna run me out," said one resident who goes by "Al." "I'll be carried out before I ran out I'll leave it like that."

During the meeting, the mayor of the newly-formed city of Renaissance, formed out of a piece of south Fulton County, gave an impassioned speech to residents, saying they're fed up.

"These people are like roaches," Bill Edwards said. "You put the light on 'em they'll go away."

Fulton County Police have promised to be visibly and active in the neighborhood, bringing in its crime suppression unit to put a stop to the shootings.

While Edwards said they'll likely not stop crime 100 percent, he said together, they'll try their best.

"All I'm trying to tell you is, we going to get it the hell out of Pointer Ridge," he said. "If it goes somewhere else in South Fulton, in this city, we're going to get it the hell out of here too."
