ATLANTA — A 3-year-old is hurt after being hit by a bullet at an Atlanta apartment complex Monday evening, according to the police department.

Atlanta Police responded shortly before 5:40 p.m. to the Ashley Cascade Apartments at 1371 Kimberly Way SW

When officers arrived, they found the toddler with a gunshot wound. APD said the 3-year-old was alert, conscious and breathing, and they were taken to the hospital.

Investigators believe the toddler was outside when the gunfire erupted and subsequently shot.

APD's aggravated assault unit is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

This isn't the first time gunfire has broken out at the troubled apartment complex. 11Alive has previously reported on several shootings and other crimes over the past few years.

The most recent incident was in March 2023, when APD said a dispute between a man and a woman led to the man firing a gun into the air during an argument. Additionally, in May 2023, investigators said an elderly woman was assaulted by a man with a knife during a family dispute.

Back in July 2021, police said an expectant mother was shot twice after shots were fired through her apartment. The 27-year-old was hit by stray gunfire while she slept.

Later that same month, APD said a man was shot and killed after officers responded to a call about a fight.

Then, in March 2022, another man was critically injured after a shooting. Investigators previously said two men had been in an argument when it escalated to gunfire.
