Organic peroxide spill at DeKalb FedEx facility; one employee taken to hospital

DeKalb County Fire Rescue said it happened around 7:30 a.m.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A chemical spill occurred Thursday morning at a DeKalb County FedEx facility, with one employee going to the hospital with minor inhalation injuries, fire officials said.

DeKalb County Fire Rescue said the spill happened around 7:30 a.m., when a forklift driver punctured a container with about 300-500 gallons of organic peroxide inside. FedEx confirmed the spill at the facility in Conley.

According to academic experts, exposure through methods such as inhalation, eye and skin contact or ingestion can be harmful.

The FedEx freight facility on Thurman Road was reportedly evacuated with a hazmat team responding for cleanup.

In a statement from FedEx, the company said "safety is our top priority." A spokesperson added that operations were suspended at the location as the company worked with local officials and response teams to clean up the spill.

The company said customers with questions about their shipments should call 1-800-GO-FEDEX.
