The Denmark Danes take their mascot seriously

Great Danes fever spreads across the Forsyth County high school.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — If you ever been to Denmark High School, you may notice a Great Dane roaming the halls and football field with his dad, Terry Crowder.

Crowder says that Denny was the mascot before the school had officially opened, "we were still over at DeSana Middle School and I would bring Denny with me in his bed and he'd go to practices with me."

Crowder says he first began thinking about getting a Great Dane after got the job as the head football coach of the Denmark Danes. "I was like wouldn't it be cool if we had a real Great Dane mascot?" says Crowder.

Denny goes to school every day with Crowder and visits with the children and staff. Crowder says that the hallways and football field are all Denny has ever known, "he's grown up here...to him, this is how every dog lives."

Inside the head football coach's office, you'll find Denny's food and water bowl as well as Denny's various toys scattered throughout. The office also has a wall of pictures featuring college head football coaches and Denny.

And the Great Dane fever has spread, with Denmark Principal Heather Gordy adopting a 160 pound Dane earlier this summer.

"My husband and I got the fever because of Denny...everyone loves him, and he's such a great dog. So we found this rescue group that saves big dogs, and that's when we saw Percy."

Gordy says Percy does not visit the school as much as Denny, but she hopes to bring him along more often.

"Denny is definitely a staple at Denmark High and he's just so good to our students and our school," says Gordy.
