Lawrenceville man killed in fiery wreck, 5 others injured

Gwinnett County police are investigating a fatal crash Sunday when a driver attempting to cross Buford Drive collided with a vehicle traveling southbound.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — A 69-year-old Lawrenceville man was killed Sunday night after colliding with a vehicle while attempting to cross Buford Highway in unincorporated Lawrenceville.

Gwinnett Police are investigating the fatal crash that happened near Russell Road at around 9:30 p.m.

Abdulmajid Khwaja was exiting the Kroger shopping center parking lot and attempting to cross Buford Drive in a Ford Ranger.

Abel Torres-Molina, 37, of Lawrenceville, was traveling southbound on Buford Drive in the right lane. There were a total of five people inside the minivan who all had  "varying levels of injuries," police said. They were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

"Abdulmajid failed to yield the right-of-way as he was attempting to cross Buford Drive, and the vehicles collided in the right lane," Gwinnett Police said. "Both vehicles came to rest in the southwest corner of the roadway near a guardrail in front of a child care facility."

Police said the Ford Ranger caught fire and bystanders were able to remove Khwaja from the truck.

Khwaja was transported to a local hospital where he died of his injuries.

Based on the preliminary investigation, authorities say speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factors in the crash.
