Troopers will step up patrols in Georgia during Labor Day weekend

The holiday travel period will begin on Friday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. and end on Monday, Sept. 4. at 11:59 p.m.

ATLANTA — Georgia law enforcement will increase patrols on the Peach State's roads as thousands prepare to travel for Labor Day weekend.

“Labor Day weekend is an excellent time for families and friends to gather and celebrate the end of summer,” said Col. Christopher Wright, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. “It is also an opportunity for motorists to continue ensuring safety is a key priority when traveling to their destinations and back home.”

The holiday travel period will begin on Friday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. and end on Monday, Sept. 4. at 11:59 p.m.

Georgia State Patrol troopers and other law enforcement officers will be on the lookout for impaired and distracted drivers, speeders and seatbelt violators.

Last year during the 78-hour period, at least 15 people died and 243 people were hurt in crashes. Troopers also arrested 324 impaired drivers across the Peach State.

Here's how authorities said travelers could keep themselves and their loved ones safe over the weekend:

  • Observe the speed limit and traffic signals when driving to avoid a potential crash.
  • Motorists should drive sober. If they cannot drive, a person should designate a sober driver or call a rideshare service.
  • Troopers are recommending everyone wear a seatbelt in the car and especially make sure children are buckled safely.
  • Drivers should not be distracted while driving. Troopers recommend being well-rested and alert and focusing on the road. Travelers should also adhere to Georgia's Hands-Free Law
  • Plan ahead before traveling. Law enforcement authorities recommend people use their GPS and know their exits ahead of time.
