A glimpse at Delta's rebooking policy in wake of arctic blast

A number of airlines are letting travelers book different flights within a specific window to avoid the winter weather.

ATLANTA — Travel across the nation is already being affected by winter weather as many travelers scramble to change their flights before the winter storm.

People at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport said on Wednesday that they are glad they’re getting out ahead of the storm.

Savannah Stevens was flying to Dallas with her daughters Syeeta and Isla.

“Everybody’s a little more stressed out -- they’re trying to make it to their destinations on time,” Stevens said.

Thankfully, their Wednesday flight to Dallas was on time, and Stevens said this winter storm shouldn’t affect them at all.

“We’re coming back on the 30th so hopefully everything should have subsided by then," she said.

Others are not so lucky.

In the wake of potentially inclement weather, many airlines allow travelers to change their flights at no charge.

Atlanta-based Delta Airlines shared a statement explaining how they've handled the travel changes. Their statement is below.

“When rebooked travel occurs on or before (the deadline date- depending on the region) in the same cabin of service as originally booked, the fare difference will be waived.”

If travelers can’t rebook within that time frame, they can put their ticket money toward a future ticket to be used within a year.

Delta has shared specific rebooking deadlines. People will have to get a new flight by the following dates for the policy to apply:

Dec. 26: For flights to and from the Pacific Northwest and Northwest
Dec. 27: For flights to and from the Atlantic and Northeast
Dec. 28: For flights to and from the Midwest and Central Plains

Other airlines like Southwest, American, United, Jet Blue and Spirit have similar waivers.

“I think that’s a great thing the airlines are doing to make a stressful situation a little less stressful,” Stevens said.

As Stevens said, traveling during the holidays is hard enough.

“We just try to keep it calm keep our attitudes positive," she said. "Most important we’re safe and sound."
