Atlanta City Councilmen Byron Amos and Michael Julian Bond addressed the recent gun violence in the Vine City neighborhood.

The two addressed the public in a news conference on Wednesday at the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and Sunset Avenue.

According to the Atlanta City Council, members discussed crime happening within District 3. A map from the city council's website shows that District 3 starts with Vine City and extends west to the Center Hill neighborhood. It also extends north into the Georgia Tech region.

Members from Neighborhood Planning Unit L, which includes Vine City, also attended the news conference.

“We're a neighborhood under siege and under attack," Shadé Yvonne Jones, a chair of the Neighborhood Planning Unit L, said. "We are at an outrage in our community for the violence we’ve had to endure with little or no assistance from our police department. We are really looking for a change and a difference. The cry is for engagement. The cry is for public safety.”

Atlanta Police data shows at least six deadly shootings have happened since the start of 2024 in the Vine City and English Avenue neighborhoods. Already this year, APD said it had made nearly 80 arrests, recovered more than a dozen firearms and conducted more than 500 traffic stops.

On Sunday, a man was killed, and another was injured in a shooting near the Vine City Chick-fil-A located on M.L.K Jr. Drive.

Officers also recently responded after a 3-year-old grazed by a bullet near a park near Vine Street during Easter Sunday. Luckily, the toddler recovered, but police never found the suspects involved.
