Police report at least 10 gun incidents over the weekend in Atlanta

The incidents happened at varying locations across the city.

ATLANTA — Atlanta Police over the weekend reported at least 10 incidents involving shootings or gunfire, underscoring the ongoing challenges posed by gun violence.

In one of the incidents, a baby was grazed by a bullet and, in another, a 61-year-old was killed.

The other reports spanned a range of incidents - from aggravated assaults that required hospitalization to a woman accidentally shooting herself after pulling a gun during an argument.

The full list of violent incidents includes:

  • A 10-month old baby was grazed by a bullet Sunday after shots were fired outside a home on Fairlane Drive SE across from Browns Mill Golf Course. Police said the baby was grazed on the ear.
  • A 61-year-old was found shot and killed at a home on Oak Street in the West End neighborhood on Friday. APD identified the victim as Ossie Turner. It was unclear what led to the shooting.
  • A woman accidentally shot herself when she pulled a gun during an argument around 3 a.m. Saturday morning. Police said her brother stepped in to take the gun away and that it went off during the struggle.
  • Police reported an aggravated assault around 8 p.m. Sunday on MLK Drive in the Atlanta University Center area. APD said one person was shot and taken to the hospital in serious condition. It wasn't clear what led to the shooting. 
  • APD said a man was shot during an argument with another man at a location Kelly Street, by Rawson-Washington Park on Sunday. Police said he took himself to Grady Hospital, where they determined he was the "primary aggressor" in the argument and then placed under arrest.
  • Around 5:45 a.m. Sunday, a man was shot in the buttocks during an argument at a location on Jackson Street in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
  • Also in the early morning Sunday, police said a woman was found shot after officers responded to a scene on Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. in the Atlanta University Center area. APD said the woman was in an argument with a man that escalated to the shooting. "Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident," a police statement said.
  • A man accidentally shot himself in the foot around 11:15 p.m. Saturday night when he "attempted to conceal his firearm during a security pat down" at an establishment in the West End.
  • A woman said her car and home were shot at on Kenmore Street in the Cascade Road neighborhood on Friday night. She said two juveniles were in the car at the time of the shooting, but no one was hurt.
  • A man said his home was shot at on Bicknell Street near where I-75 and 85 diverge in south Atlanta on Sunday. In that instance, as well, two minors were in the home but were not injured.
