Headland Drive residents say MARTA has not followed up on speeding bus complaints

In response to our report, MARTA sent a statement saying they would address their concerns. However, residents say they have not been contacted.

EAST POINT, Ga. — A MARTA bus stop has been in front of J.H. Hall’s home on for more than 20 years.

“I moved to this neighborhood in 1996, and I love it here,” said Hall.

However, the speed of the buses on Headland Drive is making life unbearable, according to Hall.

“The speeding buses and the loud voice message on that bus is a nuisance to this community,” said Hall.

She isn’t the only one on her street who feels that way.

In April, My East Point News spoke to several in the neighborhood who say buses have affected them as well.

“You can feel vibrations, sometimes pictures even shake when the buses go by,” said Teresa Ugwanyi.

In response to our report, MARTA sent a statement saying they would address their concerns. The actions representatives said they would take are as follows:

  • Determined bus announcements on Headland Drive are too loud. Engineers are currently fixing.
  • Supervisors will monitor bus drivers to make sure they’re complying with the speed limit
  • MARTA will conduct radar checks for all vehicles.
  • A bus supervisor will contact complainants including Mrs. Hall.

However, Hall says there haven’t been any results.

“Absolutely nobody from MARTA has contacted me or any other resident on Headland Drive to state that they will follow up on what they discussed,” said Hall.

On Tuesday, MARTA spokesperson Stephany Fisher sent an updated statement in today in response to Hall’s claims, which reads in part:

“While we have had Bus, Supervisors visit Ms. Hall’s neighborhood to monitor bus speed along Headland Drive, we have not yet been able to arrange an in-person meeting with her.”

“I have decided to elevate this to our senior management and make arrangements for our Senior Director of Public Engagement and a City Councilmember to speak with Ms. Hall and other residents of Headland Drive either at their convenience or their next available community meeting.”
